U.S. Special Envoy Urges Formal Talks to End Sudan Violence

The U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Periello, is calling for urgent talks to address the escalating violence in war-torn Sudan. With UN agencies warning of potential catastrophic consequences, Periello emphasized the need for formal discussions involving key regional actors and voices from within the country.

Periello highlighted the importance of Saudi Arabia’s role in hosting the Jedda peace talks and the initiatives of other regional countries as valuable experiences to draw upon. He expressed hope that these talks would take place soon after Ramadan, emphasizing the immediate priorities of ending violence and improving humanitarian access.

The recent outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced from their homes. UN agencies have reported widespread food insecurity affecting up to 18 million people, with horrific human rights violations, including sexual violence.

Periello stressed the sense of urgency in finding a solution, with regional actors recognizing the crisis is approaching a critical point. He urged all parties to set aside their differences to work towards a lasting resolution.

Describing his emotional interactions with Sudanese citizens fleeing the violence, Periello conveyed their harrowing experiences of imminent death and lack of communication with loved ones. He highlighted the particularly horrific treatment of women in the conflict, noting the historical pattern of women bearing the brunt of violence through sexual assault.

The U.S. envoy emphasized the need to leverage various peace initiatives to end the violence, establish a humanitarian corridor, and support Sudanese aspirations for a more democratic future. As the international community mobilizes to address the crisis in Sudan, Periello’s call for inclusive dialogue and immediate action resonates with the global audience.
