The Labour Party (LP) has taken a bold step by formally petitioning key government institutions in Nigeria to intervene and protect the party from further aggression by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The LP is seeking disciplinary action against NLC President Joe Ajaero and other union leaders for their alleged involvement in the vandalization of LP properties during recent picketing incidents at the party’s secretariats nationwide.
Tensions between the NLC and LP reached a boiling point when NLC members picketed LP secretariats, demanding the resignation of LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure. This led to the destruction of LP properties and even resulted in some staff members losing their salaries.
In response, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that the LP is open to all Nigerians who align with its ideology, programs, and constitution, regardless of their background. The LP is calling on the government to define the NLC’s role and address the alleged claim of ownership over the LP, which has led to harassment and interference in the party’s activities.
Describing the NLC’s actions as an abuse of office, the LP is urging for proper sanctions to be imposed. The party emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, especially in the current challenging economic climate in Nigeria.
The LP’s statement highlights the misuse of workers’ funds by the NLC to sponsor insurrection within the Labour Party, calling for Ajaero and other NLC leaders to be held accountable. The LP asserts that the NLC has no right to picket an organization without a trade dispute and that the actions of the NLC violate various laws and regulations.
As tensions escalate, the LP is advocating for a peaceful resolution to prevent further aggression and ensure the rule of law is upheld. The party is urging for the NLC leadership to be educated on the limits of their power and to face appropriate disciplinary measures.
In a time of economic hardship for many Nigerians, the LP is emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues through lawful means to avoid chaos and maintain stability in the country.
