Medical expert Dr. Christopher Otabor has raised concerns about the detrimental impact of medical tourism on Nigeria’s healthcare system and economy. He highlighted the alarming trend of Nigerian doctors leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad, resulting in a severe shortage of medical professionals in local hospitals.

During a recent visit by the Guild of Medical Directors to Alliance Hospital, Dr. Otabor emphasized the urgent need for the government to prioritize investment in the health sector. He pointed out that the current doctor-to-patient ratio in Nigeria is far below the global standard, with one doctor having to attend to as many as 10,000 patients.

“The quality of medical care in Nigerian hospitals is suffering due to the lack of healthcare professionals,” Dr. Otabor stated. “Some villages and local governments do not have a single doctor, leaving many communities without access to essential healthcare services.”

Dr. Otabor also highlighted the issue of doctors’ welfare, noting that healthcare professionals who are not properly compensated are more likely to seek opportunities abroad. He warned that a lack of investment in the health sector could lead to a major crisis in the future.

In order to address these challenges, Dr. Otabor called on the government to increase funding for the healthcare system, improve doctors’ working conditions, and invest in medical equipment. He also stressed the importance of supporting private hospitals in Nigeria to reduce the need for expensive medical treatments overseas.

“We need to bridge the gap in healthcare capacity locally and prevent capital flight to other countries,” Dr. Otabor explained. “By investing in our healthcare system, we can ensure that more Nigerians have access to affordable and quality medical care.”

As journalists, Dr. Otabor urged the media to raise awareness about the critical issues facing the health sector and encourage public discourse on potential solutions. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, healthcare professionals, and the media to develop a comprehensive strategy for national development.

In conclusion, Dr. Otabor emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to save lives and improve healthcare in Nigeria. By working together to address the challenges facing the health sector, he believes that the country can build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for the future.
