The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made a commitment to delineate the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State, following a Supreme Court ruling on December 2, 2022. This decision was announced by INEC National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus during a stakeholders meeting in Asaba, where it was agreed that the interests of all ethnic groups in the constituency would be taken into account.
Stakeholders at the meeting resolved to adhere to the Supreme Court’s directive and begin sensitizing their communities about the upcoming delineation process. INEC has also received input from political and traditional leaders in the constituency, which will guide the execution of the delineation.
Chief Thomas Ereyitomi, the current representative of the Warri federal constituency in the House of Representatives, hailed the Supreme Court ruling as a victory for all residents. He emphasized that the delineation would benefit the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo communities, describing it as a positive development for everyone involved.
Representatives from the Urhobo, Ijaw, and Itsekiri groups expressed their support for the delineation process and urged INEC to ensure fairness and transparency. INEC deputy director Kehinde Mustapha outlined the criteria and guidelines for the delineation of wards and polling units, emphasizing the importance of establishing electoral units that accurately represent the local population.
