The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Nigeria has launched a manhunt for Nadeem Anjarwalla, a suspect in an ongoing criminal investigation into the activities of Binance in the country. Anjarwalla managed to escape from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March 2024, prompting a joint effort by security agencies, government departments, and the international community to track him down.
According to Zakari U. Mijinyawa, the Head of Strategic Communication at ONSA, efforts are underway to apprehend Anjarwalla, who fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport. Interpol has been contacted to issue an international arrest warrant for the suspect, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities and was serving as Binance’s Africa regional manager.
The personnel responsible for Anjarwalla’s custody have been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his escape. The Federal Government of Nigeria has been investigating money laundering and terrorism financing activities on the Binance platform, like many other governments worldwide.
Anjarwalla was under a 14-day remand order by a Nigerian court and was due to appear in court on 4 April 2024 before his escape. ONSA is calling on the Nigerian public and the international community to provide any information that could aid in the apprehension of the suspect.
