William Troost-Ekong Reflects on AFCON 2023 Final Loss and Player of the Tournament Win

Nigerian defender, William Troost-Ekong, is still coming to terms with the heartbreak of missing out on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations title. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Super Eagles fell short in the final against hosts Cote d’Ivoire, losing 2-1.

Troost-Ekong, who scored three goals for Nigeria in the tournament, was awarded the Player of the Tournament accolade. However, the disappointment of not clinching the championship still lingers.

In a recent interview with CNN World Sports, Troost-Ekong expressed his mixed emotions about the tournament. “It was bitter-sweet in the end,” he said. “When you come so close to victory, all you want is to lift the trophy. It was tough to lose in the final, especially after seeing some of the top teams being eliminated earlier in the competition.”

Despite his individual success, Troost-Ekong admitted that he would have gladly traded his Player of the Tournament award for a winner’s medal. “I still would have swapped it for a winner’s medal though,” he confessed.

The Nigerian defender’s reflections on the AFCON 2023 final highlight the highs and lows of competitive sports. Troost-Ekong’s honesty and humility in the face of defeat make him a true sportsman, deserving of both recognition and respect.
