Manchester United’s recent struggles have left manager Erik ten Hag’s position in jeopardy, with reports swirling that the club’s new part-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is eyeing England manager Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement.
However, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has issued a cautionary tale to Southgate, advising him to think twice before taking on the daunting role at Manchester United. Souness emphasized the immense pressure and challenges that come with managing one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“The Manchester United job is fraught with danger,” Souness warned in a recent interview. “Whoever takes on that role will have a monumental task ahead of them. It’s possible that the current manager may still be in charge next year, given the turbulent season the club has had.”
Manchester United’s disappointing 2023-24 campaign has seen them fall out of contention for both the Premier League title and the Champions League, casting doubt on ten Hag’s future at the club. Despite the uncertainty, Souness believes that Southgate should steer clear of the job, citing the immense weight that comes with managing a club of United’s stature.
“I don’t believe he would be the right fit,” Souness expressed on talkSPORT. “The Manchester United manager’s role is not one to be taken lightly. It carries a tremendous amount of responsibility and expectation.”
As speculation continues to swirl around the managerial position at Manchester United, it remains to be seen whether Southgate will heed Souness’ warning or take on the challenge of leading one of the most iconic clubs in football history.
