Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto is urging the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive action in addressing the insecurity in the northern regions of the country. In a recent interview in Rivers State, he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into individuals claiming to have connections with bandits.
“It is clear that the Federal Government, especially the intelligence community, is aware of what is happening,” Bishop Kukah stated. “There are prominent Nigerians who openly boast about their knowledge of the bandits’ whereabouts. It is crucial for the government to identify and interrogate those who are collaborating with these criminals.”
His call for action comes in the wake of Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi being questioned by security agencies for his remarks on bandits’ activities. Bishop Kukah also expressed concern about the recent wave of school kidnappings, including the abduction and subsequent release of 137 schoolchildren in Kaduna State.
While commending the children’s safe return, Bishop Kukah highlighted the psychological impact of such traumatic experiences on the young victims. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between security agencies and individuals with valuable information, stressing the government’s ability to apprehend those responsible for these crimes.
As Nigeria grapples with escalating insecurity, Bishop Kukah’s plea for accountability and collaboration resonates with many concerned citizens. It is imperative for the government to heed his call and take decisive steps to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.
