The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Tuesday, March 26, announced the appointment of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed as the new acting national chairman of the party.

Ahmed takes over the affairs of the party from Alhaji Abba Kawu Ali who resigned his position at the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on Tuesday.

A statement by the national publicity secretary of the party, Yakubu Shendam, said Alhaji Ali resigned based on advice from his personal Physician.

The statement reads: “Dr. Ajuji Ahmed has been elected as the new Acting National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), following the resignation of Abba Kawu Ali.

“Abba Kawu Ali, during the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting at the National Headquarters of the Party, 11 Mahatma Gandhi Street Area 11, Abuja, said his decision to resign as the Ag. national chairman was based on advice from his personal Physician.

“This prompted a motion for the nomination of a New Acting National Chairman, and the choice of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed was unanimously supported by all members of the NWC.”

Until his new position, Dr Ahmed was the Deputy National Secretary of the party and the highest-ranking officer of the party from the North East.

It could be recalled that the first National Chairman of the Party, Prof. Ahmed Rufai Alkali resigned his position shortly after the 2023 general elections paving the way for the emergence of Kawu Ali who was then the vice chairman of North East.

A source within the party told The Nation that the party had to settle for Dr Ahmed because the Constitution States that the position vacated by an officer of the party will be filled by somebody from the same part of the country.

That is why when Prof. Alkali left, we settled for Kawu Ali because there was no Deputy National chairman in the North. Now that Kawu has left, we had to settle for the highest-ranking officer from his zone which is the northeast.

Dr. Ahmed is expected to lead the party into the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
