During a meeting with a delegation from the United States Congress, led by Senator Cory Booker, President Tinubu reiterated his determination to ensure adherence to the rule of law and expedite the sustainable provision of good governance, justice, and fairness for all Nigerians. He highlighted the importance of defending democracy and the rule of law, emphasizing the need to fight for these principles to ensure their survival.
President Tinubu emphasized the significance of translating democracy into tangible benefits for the people, such as quality healthcare, education, food security, shelter, and overall economic prosperity. He stressed Nigeria’s role as a crucial partner for democracy in Africa and beyond, citing the country’s position as the continent’s largest economy and democracy.
Furthermore, President Tinubu called for a more prudent and pragmatic partnership between the United States and Africa, urging the US to consider enhancing critical development programs to strengthen ties with the continent. He proposed a “Marshall Plan for Africa,” drawing parallels to the post-World War II aid provided to Europe, emphasizing the need for support to address Africa’s economic challenges.
President Tinubu also urged the United States to address the root causes of democratic unrest in Africa through strategic support rather than aid. He highlighted the exploitation of Africa’s resources and the need for technology and financial incentives to drive economic prosperity and development in the region.
Senator Booker praised President Tinubu as a visionary leader who makes tough decisions for the benefit of Nigerians, emphasizing the shared values of democracy, rule of law, and commitment to peace and good governance between Nigeria and the United States. In response to concerns raised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, regarding allegations of religious intolerance, U.S. Congresswoman Sara Jacobs reassured that there is a broad consensus in the U.S. House of Representatives and the White House to not designate Nigeria as a country of concern.
