The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged students and other stakeholders to disregard a list addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, detailing accredited public and private universities in Benin Republic.

A statement by NANS Senate President Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez noted that the purported list has been circulating on social media.

He noted that the dissemination of false information regarding university accreditation not only undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s education system but also causes unnecessary distress to stakeholders.

Afeez called on  the Ministry of Education to take swift action to address this issue and provide accurate information to the public.

“The spread of misinformation regarding university accreditation is a serious issue that demands immediate attention from the Ministry of Education.

“Clear communication and decisive action are essential to restore trust and ensure that stakeholders have access to accurate and reliable information. Let us work together to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and alleviate the concerns of students, parents, and educational institutions.

“Furthermore, delays in accreditation processes have exacerbated concerns among students awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

“The dissemination of false information only serves to prolong their wait and adds to their frustrations. Urgent action is needed from the Ministry of Education to expedite investigations into the matter and provide a comprehensive report promptly. This will enable eligible students to proceed with their NYSC registration without further delay.

“The  Ministry of Higher Education in Benin has denounced the fake list with a disclaimer, asserting that the full list of accredited universities is available on their website. They have also stated that those responsible for creating the fake list will be brought to book,” the statement said.
