The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a significant step by appointing caretaker committees in various states, local governments, and wards, where the executives’ tenures have expired. This decision was made during a meeting of the National Working Committee with state chairmen, led by the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature.

The move comes as a proactive measure to avoid creating a leadership vacuum or potential crisis within the party. The PDP has appointed caretaker committees in 21 states to oversee the party’s affairs at different levels for a period of three months. This decision was made in accordance with the party’s constitution, specifically Section 29 (2) (b), and approved by the National Executive Committee.

The caretaker committees will be responsible for running the party’s affairs in their respective states, local government areas, and wards until new executives are elected. The appointments will take effect on specific dates in March 2024, varying from state to state.

The National Working Committee has emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among party leaders, stakeholders, and members to ensure the stability, growth, and success of the PDP at all levels. The caretaker committees will not fill vacancies that arise due to death, defection, or resignation, maintaining the status quo until new elections are held.

Overall, this strategic move by the PDP aims to maintain continuity and effective leadership within the party while preparing for future elections and organizational development. It underscores the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring smooth transitions in leadership.
