Bishop Kukah Calls for Interrogation of Bandit Affiliates Amid Rising

In response to the alarming increase in banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria, Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese has raised concerns about individuals with close ties to the bandits. He believes that those who associate with the criminals should be thoroughly investigated to address the ongoing crisis.

Kukah’s remarks come in the wake of the recent release of 137 schoolchildren who were kidnapped in Kaduna State. The month of March has seen a surge in kidnappings, with incidents reported in Borno, Kaduna, and Sokoto states.

Meanwhile, Islamic cleric Sheik Ahmad Gumi has advocated for a non-violent approach to dealing with the bandits, suggesting that understanding their grievances may lead to a peaceful resolution. However, some have questioned Gumi’s motives, speculating that he may have ties to the criminals.

The Federal Government has taken note of Gumi’s comments and has invited him for questioning. Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that no one is above the law, and individuals making reckless statements will be held accountable.

In response to Kukah’s call for thorough investigations into those connected to the bandits, Dr. Pogu Bitrus of the Middle Belt Forum echoed the sentiment, stressing the need to root out criminal elements and their enablers. He criticized the government for allowing insecurity to persist and called for decisive action to restore peace.

Former lawmaker Hon Shehu Yusuf and Arewa Youths Consultative Forum President Alhaji Yerima Shettima also expressed support for Kukah’s stance, urging the government to take swift action against those aiding the bandits.

As Nigeria grapples with the scourge of banditry and kidnapping, voices like Bishop Kukah’s are calling for accountability and justice to bring an end to the cycle of violence and fear gripping the nation. It is imperative for the government to heed these calls and take decisive steps to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.
