In a surprising turn of events, supporters of former Senate President and secretary to the government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have made a bold move by crossing over to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
These loyalists, who were once members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ivo LGA, include prominent figures such as former two-term House of Representatives member, Hon. Livunus Makwe, former two-term House of Assembly member, Hon. Oliver Osi, and Aja Nwabueze, the deputy governorship candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general elections in the state.
Joining them in this political shift are leaders and members of other opposition parties in the local government, such as the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the National Rescue Movement, NRM.
The reception of these defectors was marked by a warm welcome from the APC state chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, and Ivo LGA chairman, Chief Emmanuel Ajah. Ajah emphasized the inclusivity of the APC, stating, “We are one big family, we are united. We will give you your dues in the party, and we will carry you along in everything we do.”
Speaking on behalf of the PDP defectors, Makwe highlighted their decision to join the APC as a means to strengthen and add value to the party. He cited the abandonment of zoning by the PDP during the 2023 general election as a key factor in their defection, commending the local government chairman for fostering peace in Ivo LGA.
Additionally, the deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Ajah Nwabueze, and the chairman of NRM in the local government, Orji Joseph, expressed their attraction to the APC due to Governor Nwifuru’s leadership style, which they believe has brought unity to the state.
Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha reassured existing party members that the arrival of the defectors should not be seen as a threat, but rather as healthy competition that will bring out the best in everyone. He emphasized the importance of unity and peace within the party, promising that no one would be marginalized.
With the addition of these influential figures from opposition parties, the APC in Ivo LGA is poised to strengthen its position and eliminate any remaining opposition. The party leaders are optimistic about the future and are committed to fostering a harmonious and inclusive political environment.
