The Tiv Traditional Council (TTC) played a crucial role in mediating a peace agreement between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The two political heavyweights, who were once close allies, found themselves embroiled in a bitter power struggle over the leadership of the North Central state.
The tension reached a boiling point when Governor Alia inaugurated a factional APC State Executive Council, prompting the police to intervene and take control of the APC State Secretariat to prevent potential violence.
Concerned by the escalating crisis, the Tiv paramount ruler, Prof James Ayatse, and the TTC invited Governor Alia and Senator Akume to Gboko, the headquarters of the Tiv race, for a closed-door meeting to address their differences. Following the meeting, Ayatse announced that both leaders had agreed to set aside their political animosities and prioritize the progress of Benue state.
In a statement to the press, Ayatse emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation for the development of the region. He expressed confidence in the commitment shown by Governor Alia and Senator Akume to work together harmoniously moving forward.
The reconciliation meeting was attended by witnesses from both sides, with Sen Barnabas Gemade standing in for Governor Alia and Michael Aondoakaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, representing Senator Akume. Despite the positive outcome of the meeting, both the SGF and the Governor declined to speak to the media.
The resolution reached between Governor Alia and Senator Akume was seen as a significant step towards peace and unity in Benue state. The traditional rulers present at the meeting expressed their belief that the leaders would honor their commitments and work together for the betterment of the people.
The successful mediation by the TTC not only defused a potentially volatile situation but also set a positive example of conflict resolution and cooperation in the political landscape of Benue state. The unity forged between Governor Alia and Senator Akume underlines the importance of putting aside personal differences for the greater good of the community.
