Nigerian Diplomatic Turf Uncertainty: Delay in Ambassadorial Appointments

The Nigerian diplomatic landscape is currently facing uncertainty due to delays in appointing substantive heads of Nigerian foreign missions as ambassadors and high commissioners. This delay, which began last September when the heads of missions were recalled, has raised concerns among retired Nigerian ambassadors and experts in international relations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not officially commented on the reasons for the delay, but sources within the Ministry suggest that the issue lies with the Presidency. Ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi, a former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of having ambassadors in place to maintain Nigeria’s standing in the international community.

Former permanent secretary Ambassador Bulus Lolo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of having ambassadors in rank-conscious diplomatic circles. He also pointed out the potential negative impact of delayed appointments on Nigeria’s access to investment opportunities and bilateral relationships.

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to Singapore, Ambassador Ogbole Ode, explained the intricate process of nominating, screening, appointing, and deploying principal envoys to diplomatic missions. He emphasized the need for timely appointments to ensure continuity in governance and effective representation on the global stage.

Dr. Austin Maho, an expert in international relations, stressed the importance of taking Nigeria’s diplomatic responsibilities seriously. He urged President Tinubu to expedite the appointment of ambassadors to drive the country’s foreign policy objectives effectively.

International Constitutional Law expert Livingstone Wechie highlighted the grave implications of not having ambassadors and high commissioners in place. He warned that Nigeria’s diplomatic credibility could suffer if the issue is not addressed promptly, especially in a time when global challenges require collaborative solutions.

Overall, the delay in appointing ambassadors and high commissioners is seen as a critical issue that needs urgent attention to safeguard Nigeria’s diplomatic interests and enhance its global standing. The call for swift action underscores the importance of diplomatic representation in advancing national interests on the world stage.
