Maigatari Local Government Council Takes Action Against Meningitis Outbreak

Officials from Maigatari Local Government Council in Jigawa State, Nigeria, have sadly confirmed the deaths of six individuals due to suspected cases of meningitis. The Primary Health Care manager, Abdullahi Muhammad, revealed that the council has identified over 38 confirmed cases of meningitis, with six resulting in fatalities. These cases have been reported across 10 different political wards within the local government.

In response to this outbreak, the council has targeted over 210,455 individuals between the ages of 1-29 for vaccination. The council chairman, Uzairu Nadabo, emphasized the importance of meticulous planning and coordination for a successful vaccination campaign. Stakeholder meetings and advocacy visits to traditional and religious leaders have been conducted to raise awareness and garner support for the vaccination efforts.

A task force team, consisting of security agencies, traditional leaders, and community representatives, has been established to ensure compliance and oversee the smooth implementation of the vaccination program. Addressing vaccine hesitancy, targeted interventions have been carried out in areas such as Baskari village where resistance was observed.

Maigatari LGA has made significant investments in logistics and storage facilities, including the repair of deep freezers, to maintain the efficacy of the vaccines. With a focus on community engagement and logistical support, the local government is determined to effectively implement the vaccination campaign and minimize the impact of the meningitis outbreak.
