Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun has made it clear that the new retirement age of 65 years old and length of service of 40 years for teachers in Osun public schools will be strictly enforced. This directive was reiterated in a circular issued by Ayanleye Aina, the Head of Service, in Osogbo.

The guidelines state that in order for teachers to benefit from the new retirement age, they must be within the education cadre recognized in the scheme of service. Additionally, they must be registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, medically fit as confirmed by a qualified medical doctor, and not under any disciplinary action.

Furthermore, eligible officers must apply six months before reaching the age of 60 years or 35 years of service, whichever comes first. The application must be endorsed by the Head Teacher/Principal and addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

It is important to note that the period of extension is not pensionable. The Ministry of Finance and the State Universal Basic Education Board have been directed to cease payment of salaries to those who are already enjoying the new retirement age without meeting the necessary conditions.

The circular emphasizes the importance of compliance with the guidelines and requests relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to ensure widespread circulation and strict adherence to the directives.
