The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a remarkable achievement, generating over N1.3 trillion in revenue during the first quarter of 2024. This significant increase of 122.35% compared to the same period last year showcases the service’s impressive growth trajectory.

Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi shared this news during a press briefing in Abuja, highlighting the month-by-month analysis that demonstrated substantial growth in revenue. In January 2024 alone, the NCS recorded a revenue of N390.824 billion, a 95.6% increase from the previous year.

The NCS also made significant strides in combating smuggling activities, with 572 seizures valued at N10.59 billion in Duty Paid Value (DPV) and the arrest of 22 suspects. Rice, petroleum products, motor vehicles, and textiles were among the top items seized during this period.

To enhance enforcement capabilities and combat smuggling, the NCS has implemented innovative strategies such as the integration of geospatial technology, satellite imagery, and Artificial Intelligence tools. These efforts aim to monitor activities along the extensive 4,000 km borders more effectively and establish a Command and Control center for comprehensive border surveillance.

Despite facing challenges due to fluctuations in exchange rates directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the NCS remains committed to mitigating the impact on import activities. Regular consultations with the CBN, supported by the Minister of Finance, are underway to address these issues and ensure continued revenue growth.

The NCS’s dedication to enhancing border security, combating smuggling, and maximizing revenue collection underscores its vital role in Nigeria’s economic landscape. With a strong focus on innovation and collaboration, the NCS is poised to achieve even greater success in the future.
