President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has raised alarm over Russia’s alleged plans to deploy an additional 300,000 troops to the front lines in Ukraine by the start of June. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky expressed concerns about the escalating military buildup and emphasized the need for a strong response to Russian aggression.
While the exact number of troops that Ukraine intends to mobilize remains uncertain, Zelensky clarified that the country does not require half a million soldiers. He stressed the importance of the upcoming months of May and June as crucial periods for Ukraine to pursue its objectives in the ongoing conflict.
“We must be prepared for what Russia is planning,” Zelensky stated. “They are preparing to mobilize an additional 300,000 soldiers by June 1. It is imperative that we, along with our partners, stand firm against any Russian incursions. We must emerge victorious in this war.”
The Ukrainian president’s remarks come in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s activation of a routine spring conscription campaign, which saw 150,000 citizens called up for military service. Ukraine’s military intelligence has also warned of Russia’s intentions to intensify its mobilization efforts following Putin’s landslide victory in the recent presidential election.
Notably, the Kremlin has faced criticism from Russian citizens over its recruitment drives aimed at bolstering defenses against Ukraine. As tensions continue to mount in the region, the international community remains on high alert for any further escalations in the conflict.
