Microsoft, a multinational technology company, recently revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could potentially contribute up to USD15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This groundbreaking announcement was made by Theo Watson, a Commercial Lawyer at Microsoft Africa, during his presentation on the “AI Opportunity in Africa” at the African AI Journalists Academy.

Watson highlighted that out of the projected USD15.7 trillion that AI could generate, a significant USD1.2 trillion could be attributed to Africa. This represents a substantial 5.6% increase in the continent’s GDP by the end of the decade. However, Watson stressed the importance of responsible regulation of AI to fully harness its potential and reap its benefits.

In navigating the AI-powered future, Watson emphasized the need for responsible and sustainable innovation to ensure that AI progress aligns with human values and societal norms. He underscored the importance of deep engagement with Africa’s unique challenges and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to develop culturally attuned and beneficial AI solutions for African societies.

Microsoft’s responsible AI journey, which began in 2016, prioritizes principles such as fairness, reliability, safety, privacy, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. This commitment to building trust and security underscores Microsoft’s dedication to developing and using AI technologies responsibly.

During the webinar, Akua Gyekye, Government Affairs Director at Microsoft Africa, highlighted the transformative impact of technology on various industries and socioeconomic issues. She cited examples such as the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa using AI to reduce water wastage and provide innovative water and sanitation services, as well as farmers in Nigeria and Kenya receiving customized farming advice based on AI-driven insights.

Gyekye also outlined a blueprint for governing AI in Africa, emphasizing the importance of promoting transparency, ensuring academic and public access to AI, implementing safety measures for AI systems controlling critical infrastructure, and fostering new public-private partnerships to address societal challenges effectively.

In conclusion, Microsoft believes that by creating powerful technologies responsibly and through collaborative partnerships, Africa can fully realize the opportunities presented by AI in the future. This commitment to responsible innovation and ethical AI development underscores Microsoft’s dedication to shaping a future where technology benefits society as a whole.
