Bobrisky Convicted for Naira Abuse: Influencer Faces Prison or Fine

The Federal High Court in Lagos has made a ruling against the well-known crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for his involvement in the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

Bobrisky faced four counts of naira abuse charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as reported by Media Talk Africa. After a thorough review of the case, Justice Abimbola Awogboro found him guilty of the offenses.

During the court proceedings, Bobrisky expressed his lack of awareness regarding the laws surrounding the abuse of the Naira. Despite this, he eventually pleaded guilty to the initial four counts related to the Naira abuse charges.

As a prominent social media influencer with a substantial following of over five million individuals, Bobrisky appealed to the judge for a second chance to utilize his platform to educate his followers on the proper handling of money, particularly when it comes to the act of “spraying” money.

Acknowledging his plea, the judge emphasized that ignorance of the law does not excuse one’s actions. Bobrisky expressed remorse for his behavior and promised not to repeat the offense.

In light of the conviction, Bobrisky faces the possibility of serving a six-month prison sentence, paying a fine of N50,000, or a combination of both penalties. The CBN Act 2007, Section 21 (1) stipulates the consequences for tampering with coins or notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, highlighting the seriousness of the offense.

This ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and upholding the laws governing the handling of national currency. Bobrisky’s case underscores the accountability that individuals, regardless of their social status, must uphold when it comes to legal matters concerning financial regulations.
