The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has spoken out against the recent public outcry regarding the removal of electricity subsidies for 15% of consumers in Nigeria. According to TMSG, the majority of Nigerians will still benefit from the subsidy, making the outrage unnecessary.
In a statement released by TMSG Chairman, Jesutega Onokpasa, it was emphasized that President Bola Tinubu should be commended for approving the action that protects 85% of electricity consumers from tariff increases. This move is not only beneficial in the short term but also sets the stage for improved power supply in the future.
TMSG criticized those who are spreading misinformation about the recent tariff adjustments by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). They clarified that the price increase from N66 per kilowatt-hour to N225 only affects consumers in Band A, who receive over 20 hours of electricity daily. This adjustment is not a general tariff hike as some are portraying it to be.
While distribution companies have been pushing for cost-reflective tariffs to cover their expenses and encourage investment, President Tinubu’s decision ensures that only a specific group of consumers will be affected. Out of the 800 feeders in Band A, 300 have been exempted, mainly those serving residential areas. This means that the average electricity consumer will not see an increase in their rates, except for those in Bands B, C, D, and E. Additionally, those who do experience an increase will still benefit from lower rates compared to alternative power sources.
Overall, TMSG stands by the decision made by President Tinubu and urges the public to understand the nuances of the tariff adjustments before jumping to conclusions. The group believes that this move will ultimately lead to a more sustainable and reliable power supply for all Nigerians.
