The recent impeachment of Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor of Edo State, has sparked controversy and disappointment among the people of Edo. The Chairman of the Conference of Registered Political Parties in Edo, Samson Isibor, expressed his dismay over the impeachment, questioning the legality and fairness of the process.
The impeachment of Shaibu was initiated by the state House of Assembly following accusations of perjury and divulging confidential government information. A seven-member panel, led by Justice S.A. Omonua, was appointed by the state Chief Judge to investigate these allegations. However, Isibor criticized the Chief Judge for the swift and biased handling of the impeachment proceedings, stating that it did not align with the expectations of the Edo people.
Isibor also raised concerns about the new deputy governor, highlighting that he was a member of the LP party and had not resigned from his membership before being sworn in. This raised questions about the violation of the Electoral Act 2022 and the potential collusion between political parties to consolidate power.
Additionally, Africa Action Congress member Udoh Oberaifo condemned the impeachment, pointing out that it proceeded despite a pending case filed by Shaibu at the Federal High Court. He emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in political processes, warning against the influence of godfatherism in Edo politics.
The swift and controversial impeachment of Philip Shaibu has raised doubts about the integrity of the political system in Edo State, prompting calls for accountability and adherence to the rule of law. The actions taken by the state authorities have sparked outrage and concern among the people, highlighting the need for transparency and justice in governance.
