NLC Void National Convention Sets Up Transition Committee for Labour

The Nigeria Labour Congress made a bold move on Monday, declaring the national convention that reinstated Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party and his National Working Committee null and void.

In response to this decision, stakeholders announced plans to establish a transition committee to oversee the party’s affairs until new officers are elected within three months. The meeting was attended by prominent figures such as Prof Theophilus Ndubuaku, Abdulwahed Omar, Sylvester Ejiofor, Dr. Moses Paul, Chief Yohana Margif, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, Jonathan Asake, and Ihekwoaba Paul.

The stakeholders also emphasized the importance of conducting a forensic audit of the Labour Party, following allegations of corruption, forgery, and fraud. This resolution was outlined in a communique released after the meeting and shared with The PUNCH.

The stakeholders expressed their lack of confidence in the recent Labour Party national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, and called for the recognition of the transition committee as the interim leadership of the party. They highlighted the need to recover party assets, address cases of fraud and forgery, and ensure a transparent and inclusive national convention within three months.

In response, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the actions of the NLC stakeholders, stating that the NWC cannot be intimidated. Meanwhile, supporters of Abure took to the streets of Abuja to protest against perceived interference in the party’s affairs, demonstrating their unwavering support for the chairman.

The protest, marked by chants of ‘We want Abure’, was met with resistance from security personnel, preventing access to the venue of the NLC stakeholders meeting. The display of solidarity and determination underscored the ongoing tensions within the Labour Party.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the future of the Labour Party remains uncertain, with power struggles and conflicting interests shaping its trajectory. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story.
