Former Edo State commissioner for information, Andrew Emwanta, has made shocking allegations against Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that the appointment of Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as deputy governor was due to Obaseki’s ties to the opposition Labour Party.
Emwanta went on to suggest that Obaseki may be secretly supporting the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumude Akpata, in the upcoming gubernatorial election if the PDP fails to produce a candidate amidst internal turmoil.
Following the impeachment of former deputy governor Philip Shaibu, Obaseki appointed Omobayo, a 38-year-old chieftain of the Labour Party, as his new deputy. Omobayo had previously run as the LP candidate in the 2023 general election for Akoko Edo Federal Constituency.
Speaking on a recent Arise TV program, Emwanta criticized Obaseki for not appointing a member of the PDP as his deputy, questioning the governor’s loyalty to his own party. Emwanta claimed that Obaseki had offered him a Labour Party ticket and accused the governor of operating as a PDP member during the day and a Labour Party member at night.
Emwanta’s allegations paint a picture of political intrigue and betrayal in Edo State, with Obaseki’s supposed ties to the Labour Party coming under scrutiny. The appointment of Omobayo as deputy governor is seen as further evidence of Obaseki’s alleged support for the opposition party.
As the political landscape in Edo State continues to shift, Emwanta’s claims raise important questions about the governor’s true allegiances and the potential impact on the upcoming election. Will Obaseki’s ties to the Labour Party influence the outcome of the gubernatorial race, or will the PDP be able to overcome internal challenges and field a strong candidate?
Only time will tell, but one thing is clear – the political drama in Edo State is far from over.
