The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has launched an investigation into a mysterious illness that has emerged in the Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The Director-General of the NCDC, Jide Idris, revealed that the agency was first alerted to the strange illness on March 21, 2024.

This illness is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal distension, fever, vomiting, and weight loss, predominantly affecting children aged four to 13, as well as some adults. A national rapid response team (NRRT) has been dispatched by the NCDC to work alongside the state Ministry of Health in delving into the matter.

As of now, 164 suspected cases have been identified across six wards in Isa Local Government, resulting in four tragic fatalities. This is not the first occurrence, as a similar incident was recorded in 2023 without a definitive diagnosis.

Although initial clinical assessments have ruled out infectious origins, investigations are ongoing, including heavy metal testing. Results have shown varying levels of lead and chromium in blood samples, prompting a closer look at local activities such as mining and agricultural practices involving chemical usage.

The collaborative efforts extend beyond health institutions, involving government agencies, research bodies, and community stakeholders. However, security challenges are hindering access to affected areas, complicating response efforts.

The NCDC DG emphasized the importance of vigilance within affected areas and urged prompt reporting of symptoms to healthcare facilities or designated authorities. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing investigations and efforts to contain and understand this mysterious illness.
