Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are voicing their concerns over the recent increase in electricity tariffs. Some consumers, particularly business owners, are worried that the high cost of electricity may lead to theft as they struggle to cope with the economic situation in the country.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently announced a significant increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, who enjoy at least 20 hours of electricity supply per day. This increase, from N68/KWh to N225/KWh, has left many consumers, such as printers operating in UTC and Murg Plaza in Area 10, FCT, feeling the pinch.

Amos Okolo, a printer, expressed his frustration, stating that while the 20 hours of electricity supply is beneficial, the high cost is unsustainable for business owners. He emphasized that the new tariff could leave businesses struggling to survive, with little left to support their families.

Samuel Kolawole, another printer, echoed these sentiments, calling for a reduction in tariffs to support both rich and poor consumers. He emphasized the importance of affordable electricity to reduce reliance on generators, but stressed that the pricing must be fair to all businesses.

Abel Ajibola, a graphic designer, also raised concerns about the impact of the new tariffs on small business owners. He urged the government to reconsider the pricing to prevent consumers from resorting to electricity theft.

As consumers appeal to the government for a downward review of electricity tariffs, the need for a balance between affordability and sustainability becomes increasingly apparent. It is crucial for policymakers to consider the impact of these decisions on businesses and consumers alike, to ensure a fair and equitable energy system for all.
