Nnamdi Kanu Legal Team Threatens Court Boycott Over Fair Trial

The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a warning that they may boycott court proceedings due to perceived injustices against their client. They have expressed concerns that Kanu’s right to a fair trial is not being respected by the Department of State Services (DSS), leading to potential disruptions in the legal process.

Kanu, who is facing charges of treason and terrorism, has been in the custody of the DSS since 2021. Despite his application for bail on health grounds being rejected by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the trial is set to commence on April 17, 2024. However, Kanu’s legal team, led by Alloy Ejimakor, has been vocal about the challenges they are facing in preparing their client for trial.

During a press conference in Abuja, Ejimakor accused the DSS of obstructing their access to Kanu and seizing legal documents necessary for his defense. He emphasized that if these actions persist, the legal team may withdraw from the trial to protest against the denial of Kanu’s right to a fair trial.

Ejimakor stated, “This legal team is not going to be part of the travesty of justice. If Nnamdi Kanu is not going to get a fair trial, this legal team is not going to be part of murdering justice in a Nigerian court.” He clarified that while they will not abandon Kanu, they will refuse to participate in a process that is biased against him.

Despite efforts to reach the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, for a response to the allegations, no official statement has been provided. The situation remains tense as Kanu’s legal team stands firm in their commitment to upholding justice and fairness in the legal proceedings.
