Former Abia State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Emma Nwaka, has revealed a touching story about the late Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu, highlighting his selfless sacrifice for democracy in Nigeria.

In a heartfelt statement personally signed by Senator Nwaka and shared with Media Talk Africa, he expressed deep sadness over Onu’s passing, describing it as a shocking loss. Nwaka reminisced about their longstanding friendship, dating back to the Third Republic in the early 90s, where Onu played a pivotal role in his political journey.

Senator Nwaka recounted how Onu, during his time as governor, supported Nwaka’s successful election to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Despite facing opposition from some quarters, Onu stood firm on principles of equity and fairness, ensuring that the Isuikwuato axis had representation in the Senate, even though he hailed from a different region.

Describing Onu as a man of integrity and simplicity, Nwaka praised his leadership style and noted that even a brief tenure as governor left a lasting impact on Abia State. He highlighted Onu’s unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Project, citing an instance where Onu willingly surrendered his presidential ticket in 1998 to promote democracy in the country.

The poignant statement also revealed a poignant moment between Nwaka and Onu before the latter’s passing, underscoring the depth of their bond and the profound loss felt by Nigerians at Onu’s demise.

In commemorating the legacy of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Nwaka’s tribute serves as a reminder of the values of integrity, sacrifice, and dedication to the greater good, traits that defined the life and work of a remarkable statesman.
