Edo State Deputy Governor Impeachment Lawsuit Set for April 19

A significant legal battle is brewing in Nigeria, as the impeached Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, takes on the State House of Assembly and others in court. The Federal High Court in Abuja has set April 19 as the date to hear Shaibu’s suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/405/24, after a team of lawyers, led by Alex Ejesieme, SAN, appeared before Justice Inyang Ekwo to request a hearing.

Despite not being listed on the cause list, the lawyers, representing the defense, made their presence known in court. They explained to Justice Ekwo that the matter was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed due to a public holiday. In compliance with the court’s instructions, they showed up on Friday, only to be directed by the judge to coordinate with the court registrar for the next hearing date, which was ultimately set for April 19.

This legal showdown comes on the heels of Shaibu’s recent impeachment by the Edo State Assembly. The ousted deputy governor has vehemently contested the legality of his removal and is now seeking justice through the judicial system.
