As the April 20 governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State approaches, the political landscape is heating up with top contenders vying for the party’s ticket. The endorsement of Governor Lucky Aiywdatiwa by a group of elders within the Ondo State APC Aborigines has set the stage for an intense battle before the primary.

The group, comprising elders from all 18 local government areas of the state, conducted thorough assessments of the governorship aspirants and settled on Aiyedatiwa as their preferred candidate. With his experience as the former deputy governor and acting governor, Aiyedatiwa is seen as a frontrunner due to his popularity within the party and state.

However, other contenders like financial expert Wale Akinterinwa, political stalwart Olusola Oke, billionaire businessman Jimoh Ibrahim, loyal party man Isaacs Kekemeke, and grassroots politician Mayowa Akinfolarin are also in the race. Each candidate brings a unique set of strengths and challenges to the table, making the primary a highly anticipated event.

While Aiyedatiwa’s incumbency gives him an edge, challenges such as opposition from loyalists of late Governor Akeredolu and controversies over his academic credentials may hinder his chances. Akinterinwa’s alleged arrogance and lack of support from party leaders pose obstacles to his candidacy, while Oke’s past defections and perceived lack of trust from the national leadership could impact his campaign.

Ibrahim’s financial prowess is unmatched, but concerns about his leadership style and business ventures may sway party members against him. Kekemeke’s grassroots appeal and party loyalty are commendable, but his financial limitations could be a stumbling block. Akinfolarin’s ties to President Tinubu and federal influence give him an advantage, but his limited popularity beyond his constituency may pose challenges.

As the primary draws near, the political landscape in Ondo State is set for a showdown among these top contenders. With the party’s future at stake, the outcome of the primary will shape the course of the governorship election in November. Stay tuned as the race unfolds, and surprises may await as democracy takes its course in the Sunshine State.
