Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to swiftly appoint a new head coach for the national team. The three-time African champions have been without a permanent head coach since Portuguese Jose Peseiro departed in February.
Former international winger Finidi George took temporary charge for the recent friendlies against Ghana and Mali. Omeruo, who currently plays for Turkish club Kasimpasa, emphasized the importance of having a new head coach in place for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.
“We started the World Cup qualifiers poorly, and that’s on us as players, but I believe we have the quality to qualify for the World Cup. However, we need to address the head coach situation quickly because June is approaching,” Omeruo stated in an interview with Brila.
The center-back also expressed his support for Finidi to be appointed as the permanent head coach, praising his performance during the recent friendlies. Omeruo acknowledged the challenges faced by Finidi, including a lack of coaching staff, but commended him for maintaining the team’s playing system from the Africa Cup of Nations.
“I believe Finidi did well, considering the circumstances. He was understaffed, with only one coach serving as an analyst and no assistant. I appreciate that he stuck to the system we used at the AFCON. However, I would have liked to see more players given the opportunity to play against Mali,” Omeruo added.
As Nigeria prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers, Omeruo’s call for a swift appointment of a new head coach highlights the team’s determination to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament. With the support of players like Omeruo, the Super Eagles aim to overcome their challenges and achieve success on the international stage.
