Former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North-West, Dr. Salihu Lukman, has raised concerns about the rampant imposition of candidates within the party. Lukman highlighted the lack of regular meetings of relevant party organs as a key factor contributing to this issue.
In a statement released on Sunday, Lukman emphasized that the regular convening of party organs is essential to minimizing the imposition of candidates. He also pointed out the need to address the issue of party funding, suggesting that the party should not solely rely on elected representatives for financial support.
Looking ahead to the 2023 general election, Lukman called for deliberate reforms within the APC. He stressed the importance of activating and ensuring the functionality of all party structures in accordance with the party’s constitution. By operating in line with its constitutional provisions, Lukman believes that the APC can lead the way in reforming Nigerian politics and expanding democratic space.
Lukman highlighted the detrimental impact of undermining party organs responsible for decision-making in party primaries. He noted that the marginalization of party stakeholders in these decisions contributes to the prevalence of candidate imposition. Lukman reiterated that regular meetings of party organs, as stipulated in the party’s constitution, are crucial in reducing instances of candidate imposition and ensuring free and fair primaries.
As the APC prepares for the upcoming general election, Lukman’s call for internal reforms and adherence to constitutional provisions serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and inclusivity within political parties. By addressing these issues, the APC can strengthen its democratic processes and uphold the principles of fair representation and accountability.
