The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking in Nigeria, intercepting a large quantity of opioids and cannabis in various operations across the country.
In a recent statement, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi announced the seizure of approximately 900,000 pills of opioids in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State. Two suspects were apprehended in connection with the illicit drugs on April 9th. Additionally, a 48-year-old suspect was arrested in Calabar with 39.4kg of cannabis sativa.
Further operations led to the discovery of 230 blocks of cannabis sativa, weighing 119kg, hidden under household items. In another raid at the Ijesa-Isu forest in Ekiti, 252 kilograms of cannabis were seized. The agency also intercepted suspects loading 40kg of cannabis into the engine compartment of a gas truck in Edo.
The NDLEA’s efforts extended beyond drug seizures, with various commands conducting the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign. Activities included sensitization lectures for students and staff at Gboko Polytechnic in Benue, as well as engagements with the Nigerian Army in Lagos and meat butchers in Osogbo, Osun.
The agency’s commitment to combating drug abuse was further demonstrated through advocacy visits to government officials, including Kogi Governor Ahmed Ododo. These operations underscore the NDLEA’s dedication to eradicating drug trafficking and promoting a drug-free society in Nigeria.
