Kebbi State Assembly Suspends Lawmaker for Unguarded Utterances

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has taken decisive action by suspending Hassan Umar, the member representing Birnin Kebbi North Constituency, for making unguarded utterances. The suspension, as announced in a press statement by the Clerk of the House, Suleiman Shamaki, was a result of Umar’s instigation of some members against the leadership of the house.

During an Executive Session held on Friday, April 12, 2024, the assembly unanimously resolved to suspend Umar for his actions. The statement highlighted Umar’s offenses, which included causing disharmony between the Executive and the legislature in the House.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Kebbi State. In October 2019, the All Progressives Congress in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area suspended Shafiu Abubakar, a council chairmanship aspirant, for unlawful utterances. The Chairman of Zouro ward, Umaru Bakatara, revealed this during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.

Abubakar’s suspension came after he made disrespectful remarks about the government of APC Kebbi State during a radio interview. The party took swift action to distance itself from his actions, emphasizing its support and loyalty to the government of Kebbi State under Governor Abubakar Bagudu.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible communication and the consequences of unguarded utterances in the political arena. It is crucial for public officials and party members to uphold decorum and respect in their interactions to maintain harmony and unity within the government and party structures.
