Operation Safe Haven Denies Allegations of Shooting Innocent Civilians

Operation Safe Haven, a special military task force responsible for maintaining peace in Plateau and surrounding areas, has refuted claims of soldiers shooting innocent civilians during recent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau.

Major Samson Zhakom, the Media Officer of the operation, issued a statement denying the allegations on Monday in Jos. The Coalition of Bokkos Ethnic Youth Nationalities had accused soldiers of shooting civilians and exacerbating the vulnerability of residents in the area.

The group called for the removal of the Commander of OPSH Step-Up Headquarters 2 in Bokkos, alleging that security agencies failed to quell the recent killings in some communities. However, Major Zhakom dismissed these claims as unfounded, aimed at tarnishing the military and other security agencies’ reputation in the state.

He clarified that the security agencies deployed to Bokkos acted professionally during the confrontations between different ethnic groups on April 13, 2024. Despite facing challenges, the troops remained deployed for over 72 hours to protect law-abiding citizens and restore normalcy in the region.

Furthermore, Major Zhakom debunked the allegations against the vigilantes, stating that the deceased individual found with sophisticated weapons was not a vigilante using a dane gun, as claimed. The accusations were deemed as a deliberate attempt to exonerate the deceased from involvement in the attacks.

Addressing the call for the removal of the set-up commander in Bokkos, Major Zhakom emphasized that such demands were malicious and intended to undermine the troops’ morale. He highlighted the commander’s impartial stance during the attack and warned against inciting religious sentiments to instigate further unrest in Plateau.

In conclusion, Major Zhakom urged residents to support the military and other security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace in Plateau. Despite attempts to discredit the personnel, security agencies remain committed to preventing law and order breakdown in the region.

It is crucial for the international community to understand the complexities of the situation in Plateau and support efforts towards sustainable peace and security. Let us stand together in solidarity with the people of Plateau as they strive for a peaceful coexistence.
