Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has made a bold suggestion for his former club, urging them to make a move for Manchester United’s Raphael Varane in the upcoming summer transfer window. Varane, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2024, could potentially leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of the season after the club decided against extending his contract.

Despite being sidelined with injury currently, Varane’s future remains uncertain, with rumors linking him with a return to Real Madrid. However, Johnson believes that Chelsea should seize the opportunity to bring the experienced defender to Stamford Bridge.

In an interview with Betfred, Johnson emphasized the rarity of top-quality players being available on a free transfer, making Varane an attractive option for the Blues. While acknowledging Varane’s injury concerns, Johnson highlighted the value that the Frenchman could bring to Chelsea, even if he is not able to play every game.

“Good players like Varane don’t come around often, especially on a free transfer,” Johnson stated. “Despite his injury issues, the potential benefits of signing him outweigh the risks. Even if he only plays a limited number of games, getting Varane for free would still be a fantastic deal for Chelsea.”

With Mauricio Pochettino’s side looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, Johnson’s endorsement of Varane adds an intriguing twist to Chelsea’s transfer plans. As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Chelsea will heed Johnson’s advice and make a move for the talented defender.
