Former Liverpool defender, Jose Enrique, has recently voiced his disappointment with the performances of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo in the final third for the team. The duo’s lacklustre displays have been evident in Liverpool’s recent back-to-back home defeats, where they failed to score against Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League and Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
In an interview with Grosvenor Sport, Enrique expressed his concerns about Nunez and Gakpo’s effectiveness in front of goal. He stated that Nunez, while a good player, is not at the level required to be a Liverpool number nine. Enrique believes that Nunez may be better suited to other top teams in Europe, but not those challenging for trophies like Liverpool.
Regarding Gakpo, Enrique highlighted that the player is not a prolific goalscorer and is unlikely to replicate the goal-scoring feats of players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. While Nunez creates numerous opportunities, Enrique noted that he often fails to convert them into goals.
Liverpool fans will be hoping that Nunez and Gakpo can improve their performances in the final third to help the team bounce back from their recent defeats. As the team looks to regain their winning form, the pressure will be on the duo to deliver when it matters most.
