University students from Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states are demanding increased security measures in schools to restore confidence in parents and students regarding safety. This call to action was made during a panel discussion organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Kano, marking the 10th anniversary of the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
Fajad Harazumi, a student from the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about not paying ransom to kidnappers, enhancing security presence in schools, and establishing adequate student hostels to prevent students from living off-campus.
UNICEF’s Education Manager, Mr. Michel Banda, speaking on behalf of the Field Officer of UNICEF in Kano, highlighted the collaboration between UNICEF and the government to empower university students to lead discussions on ensuring the safety of schools in Nigeria for both students and teachers.
The students’ plea for increased security presence in schools reflects a growing concern for safety and highlights the need for proactive measures to protect educational institutions. By engaging in dialogue and advocating for change, these students are taking a proactive stance in safeguarding the future of education in Nigeria.
