The Labour Party candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has been summoned by the State Police Command following alleged security breaches at the University of Benin. The incident, which involved shootings last Friday, has sparked a wave of controversy and accusations.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department served the invitation to Akpata on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. The LP gubernatorial candidate was reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs during an investiture ceremony at the UNIBEN Staff Club, leading to his claims of an assassination attempt orchestrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the State Government.
In response to the escalating situation, the Edo State Government and the University of Benin have issued statements condemning the violence and promising thorough investigations. The State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards violence and irresponsible behavior, vowing to uphold the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the university management has established a committee, led by Professor Frederick Ekhaise, to probe the root causes of the violent incident and submit a report within a week. The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, expressed dismay over the actions of the students involved in the altercation, labeling it as unacceptable.
