The United Arab Emirates has once again shown its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries by pledging an additional $100 million. This generous donation was announced by Sheikh Shakhbut bin Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, at the recent Paris Conference on Humanitarian Issues in Sudan.
During the conference, Sheikh Shakhbut emphasized the importance of returning to the political process in Sudan to secure a ceasefire and bring an end to the conflict. He called on the international community to work together to find a solution to the crisis, enhance security and stability in Sudan, and prevent further loss of life.
The UAE’s total relief aid to those affected by the conflict now stands at $150 million, which includes crucial medical, food, and relief supplies. In addition, the UAE has established a field hospital in the city of Abeche in Chad, costing $20 million, to support Sudanese refugees. This is the second hospital opened by the UAE to provide much-needed assistance to those fleeing the violence in Sudan.
The Paris conference, organized by France, Germany, and the European Union, saw donors pledging over €2 billion to aid Sudan. However, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were notably absent from the conference. Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its astonishment and condemnation of the conference, denouncing the lack of consultation or coordination with the Sudanese government.
The UAE’s continued support and generosity towards humanitarian efforts in Sudan highlight the importance of international cooperation in addressing crises and providing assistance to those in need. With ongoing conflicts and instability in the region, it is crucial for countries to come together to find lasting solutions and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected populations.
