CSA Warns of AI-Powered Electoral Misinformation Campaigns on Social Media

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a warning to the public about the dangers of electoral misinformation and disinformation aimed at disrupting this year’s general election. Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako, the Director-General of the CSA, expressed concerns about the potential use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to spread false information on social media platforms in order to sway voters’ decisions.

Speaking at a symposium in Accra, Dr. Antwi-Boasiako highlighted the importance of collaboration among Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) to combat cyber threats in the region. He emphasized the need for social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to implement measures to detect and prevent the spread of misinformation.

With the upcoming elections, Dr. Antwi-Boasiako urged Ghanaians to be vigilant and participate in awareness campaigns to protect themselves from falling victim to false information. He stressed the role of the media in shaping public opinion responsibly and emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness in preventing online fraud.

Dr. Angel Hueca, a Senior Cybersecurity Operations Researcher, emphasized the importance of building the capacity of cybersecurity professionals to defend against cyber-attacks. He called for greater regional cooperation to share information and resources to stay ahead of emerging threats and protect cyberspace.

In light of the increasing cyber threats and the potential impact on the economy and critical infrastructure, it is crucial for stakeholders to work together to enhance cybersecurity measures and safeguard digital infrastructure. The CSA is actively engaging with both state and non-state actors to deploy necessary technologies and build capacities to detect and prevent cyber fraud. International collaboration is seen as essential for effective incident response and capacity-building programs to combat cybersecurity incidents.
