The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has launched an investigation into a mysterious illness that has been spreading in Kaduna, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. According to an update on the NCDC’s official website, the health agency is currently analyzing samples from affected individuals to determine the cause of the strange disease.

So far, there have been 196 reported cases in Isa, Sabon Birni, and Ilella local government areas of Sokoto State, with at least seven deaths. Samples have been sent to sister laboratories for further analysis, and a National Rapid Response Team has been dispatched to Zamfara to assess and provide support in response to similar cases reported there.

Residents, especially in Kaduna State, are urged to report symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss promptly. The NCDC also raised concerns about suspected heavy metal poisoning linked to mining activities, which could lead to environmental contamination.

Exposure to heavy metals poses severe health risks, so preventative measures such as avoiding direct exposure to dust and soil and enforcing safety standards in mining operations are crucial. The NCDC is working diligently to identify the cause of the illness and prevent further spread in the affected areas.
