The federal government of Nigeria through the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has cautioned members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) against fake security outfits, promising jobs in controlling illicit arms and light weapons in the country.
The zonal coordinator, southwest, Ben Akinlade, addressing 2,553 corps members in Ede orientation camp, Osun state on Thursday, April 25, lamented that desperate job seekers have fallen victim to the prowl of the fictitious body.
Akinlade also counselled corps members that civilians cannot control arms but appropriate security agencies.
He explained: “While we are still talking to you about the dangers of the proliferation of firearms in our Society, it is important to mention here, that recently some unscrupulous and unauthorized outfits moving round, deceitfully presenting themselves as the focal organisations.”
He lamented that the action of a fictitious security outfit is compounding the agency’s task and may result in confusion, and lack of credibility leading to administrative and legal disputes.
He said: “They have gone far to the extent of collecting money from members of the public seeking employment from them. All youths and corps members must be cautious of those fake outfits promising jobs.”
