Nigeria’s Trade Union Congress (TUC) is up in arms against the government’s sluggish progress on a new minimum wage, unpaid worker salaries, and a recent hike in electricity tariffs.

TUC President Festus Osifo emphasized the urgent need for a new minimum wage to stimulate the economy. He argued that the current wage fails to meet the needs of workers amidst rising inflation. The union is demanding that negotiations for a new minimum wage be fast-tracked.

Adding to the frustration, federal government workers have not received their salaries for March and April. The TUC is calling for immediate payment to alleviate the economic hardship faced by many.

The TUC also criticized the inaction of some state governments, particularly those in the Niger Delta, which are rich in oil revenue. These states, despite their financial resources, have neglected their workers’ well-being by failing to implement wage awards or provide any form of financial relief. States like Delta, Imo, and Benue were specifically named as culprits.

The recent hike in electricity tariffs further stoked the TUC’s anger. The union condemned the government’s decision to raise prices without consulting stakeholders. They argued that the increase lacked transparency and fairness, especially considering the prevalence of estimated billing. The TUC urged the government to prioritize installing prepaid meters before any tariff adjustments.

Beyond labor issues, the TUC expressed deep concern about the worsening security situation that discourages farmers from cultivating their lands. This, they argue, is a major contributor to rising food prices. The union called on the government to take decisive action to address this critical issue.

The TUC’s strong stance reflects the growing frustration among Nigerian workers. The union’s demands highlight the need for the government to prioritize a sustainable solution to the economic challenges plaguing the nation.
