The Lagos State Government has clarified recent confusion regarding a supposed minimum wage increase.
Earlier reports suggested Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a new minimum wage of N70,000. However, according to a statement released by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, this is inaccurate.
The confusion stemmed from an event at the Governor’s Office on Wednesday. Governor Sanwo-Olu unveiled the “Eko Cares” program, designed to support residents facing economic hardship. It appears comments made during the event were misinterpreted.
Omotoso clarified that Sanwo-Olu did not announce a new minimum wage. Lagos State civil servants are currently receiving the national minimum wage of N35,000, as established by the Federal Government in January 2024.
Here’s the key point: While Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the ongoing discussions for a new national minimum wage, he did not announce its implementation in Lagos. However, he did confirm that Lagos State civil servants have been receiving an additional allowance since January, effectively doubling their minimum income to N70,000.
The Governor emphasized that the state government is committed to supporting its citizens during these challenging economic times. The “Eko Cares” program exemplifies this commitment.
