Kano, Nigeria – April 27, 2024
A Kano Federal High Court has issued a temporary restraining order, halting the suspension of Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Justice A. M. Liman issued this ruling today in response to a lawsuit filed by Ganduje himself.
Challenging the Suspension
Ganduje’s lawsuit contends that the recent attempt by members of the APC’s Ganduje Ward to suspend him violated his fundamental rights. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees him the right to a fair hearing and freedom of association.
Court Order Issued
Justice Liman’s order effectively puts the suspension on hold until the court can hear the case in its entirety. This means:
- The decision to suspend Ganduje cannot be implemented until a final verdict is reached.
- All parties involved must maintain the status quo, meaning no further actions can be taken regarding the suspension until the court hearing.
Hearing Date Set
The court has scheduled a hearing for May 9th, 2024. During this hearing, both sides will have the opportunity to present their arguments. The court will then decide whether the attempted suspension of Ganduje was legal.
Who’s Who in the Case?
- Plaintiff: Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the APC
- Defendants:
- Basiru Nuhu Isah (possibly involved in the suspension attempt)
- Nigeria Police Force
- Kano State Commissioner of Police
- Inspector General of Police
- Department of State Services
Looking Ahead
This temporary order prevents the immediate enforcement of Ganduje’s suspension. The May 9th court hearing will determine the legality of the attempted suspension and potentially chart the future course for both Ganduje and the APC.
