Dubai has set its sights on becoming the undisputed leader in global air travel with the announcement of a massive new airport project. Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum unveiled plans to construct a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, aiming to transform it into the world’s largest airport.
The project carries a hefty price tag of nearly $35 billion (AED 128 billion). Construction has officially begun, marking a significant step forward for Dubai’s ambitious vision.
Once operational, the new terminal will boast a staggering passenger capacity of 260 million annually, dwarfing existing airports worldwide. This represents a fivefold increase over Dubai International Airport, currently a major player in the global aviation scene.
Officials have outlined a phased development plan. The first stage, targeted for completion within ten years, will see the airport reach a capacity of 150 million passengers annually.
Dubai International Airport, with its current capacity of 120 million passengers, has served as a vital hub for air travel. However, its location within Dubai’s city center restricts its potential for further expansion. The new Al Maktoum terminal is envisioned as its ultimate successor.
Dubai’s bold move underscores its unwavering ambition to remain a frontrunner in the aviation industry. The colossal Al Maktoum project promises to redefine airport capabilities and solidify Dubai’s position as a global leader in air travel.
