Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Construction: Demolitions Begin, Government Vows Fair Compensation

The Federal Government has commenced demolition of properties along the right of way for the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

This marks a significant step forward for President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” economic diversification plan, with the road seen as a key infrastructure project.

Minister Umahi emphasized the government’s commitment to minimizing disruption and fairly compensating affected property owners. “We understand the impact this has on people’s lives,” he said, “and we will ensure no delay in compensation payments.” The Minister also highlighted efforts to refine the construction path to minimize damage.

The project has faced criticism for its hefty price tag of N15 trillion and potential environmental concerns. However, the government maintains it will be built “within the coastline” and completed within eight years.

Demolition is expected to continue with affected residents urged to cooperate. The completed road will stretch 700 kilometres, connecting Lagos State to Cross River State with connections to several coastal states in between.
